HELIOS previews PCShare UNIX file permissions extension
Garbsen, Germany -- May 3, 2004 -- HELIOS Software GmbH -- A troublesome issue for networks supporting various client platforms is ensuring that not only are the Macintosh, Windows and UNIX users able to access and use the same server data, but that file access control mechanisms are also uniformly applied.
Macintosh and UNIX systems use the same UNIX file system permissions. However, Microsoft Windows systems use an entirely different permissions mechanism. HELIOS PCShare 3.1 already solves cross-platform file access, compatibility and locking issues, and also supports UNIX permissions for Windows clients. This ensures that the same file permissions are enforced for all users, whether they are using UNIX, Macintosh or Windows clients.
At drupa 2004, HELIOS Software will preview an upcoming PCShare advancement – a Windows Explorer shell extension for viewing and modifying the UNIX file permissions for files on PCShare server volumes. This graphical application allows Windows users to easily view and, if authorized, change, file permissions settings. The ability to view and change file permissions, and hence control access, is very significant in multiuser/network environments, especially for collaborative projects.
