HELIOS TCP/SLP Printer Driver now available for Mac OS X 3X faster than AppleTalk-PAP Printing

Garbsen, Germany -- January 20, 2003 -- HELIOS Software GmbH, a leading developer of network and prepress server software, announced the release of the HELIOS TCP/IP based printer driver for Mac OS X that further enhances its 4th generation EtherShare 3.1 file and print server software.

The HELIOS TCP/IP Print Driver is a component of the recently released EtherShare 3.1. It enables Mac OS 9 clients to print up to 3x faster than via AppleTalk PAP or Apple Remote LPR. It is now also available for Mac OS X clients. Integrated within the Mac OS X Print Center, the new HELIOS TCP/IP driver supports Service Location Protocol (SLP) browsing, enabling the easy selection of printers via the TCP/SLP Chooser list or by IP name/address. It also automates PPD (PostScript Printer Description) installation from the HELIOS print spooler.

HELIOS TCP/IP printing offers some great advantages over printing via AppleTalk:

• Print from local or remote TCP/IP networks without AppleTalk support
• Faster printing by using TCP/IP instead of AppleTalk PAP
  (great performance improvement using 100-Mbit and faster networks)
• Enables secure remote printing

The dramatic print speed increase and ease of use printing to an EtherShare server via the new HELIOS driver boosts workflows tremendously vs. printing directly to printers or other print servers.
