1. World of HELIOS: Don't re-invent the wheel
The IT market faces dramatic changes. New technologies are arriving much faster than in the past. For example, Apple's Leopard Quick Look offers document previews, Microsoft's new XPS file format (XML Paper Specification) competes with PDF, Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collection includes most major Adobe/Macromedia solutions, Microsoft Office 2007 supports PDF/XPS export, and new web applications are appearing faster than weeds.
How can users keep up and effectively integrate all these new technologies into production workflows?
We at HELIOS have developed a new server solution called Tool Server to remotely integrate solutions on different platforms instead of re-inventing them. Tool Server automates remote applications via custom tools or scripts and makes them available on your preferred server platform. It basically builds a bridge to utilize different applications and technologies on any platform. Tool Server is an important innovation included in HELIOS UB+.
2. New Tool Server example tools
Most any application that can be automated, e.g.: via AppleScript, VisualBasic, SDK's, shell scripts, etc., can now easily become a Tool Server tool.
HELIOS Tool Server provides the infrastructure to use tools, including:
• Remote distribution of jobs between Windows, Mac, and UNIX
• Return the result and error messages
• Fail safety and error handling
• Automatic load balancing depending on availability, job load and CPU performance
• Zero network configuration via Bonjour, Tool Client automatically finds its servers
• License-free installation on additional Tool Server workstations (similar to Create PDF Server)
HELIOS UB+ includes sample tools. To help resellers, programmers and scripting end-users to develop their own tools for Tool Server, we have additional examples available at: http://www.helios.de/products/TS/ts_scripts.phtml
The additional examples include:
• A Windows VisualBasic example tool
• A REALBasic example tool which works on Mac, Windows, and Linux
• A Perl based tool which works on any HELIOS platform
• Two additional AppleScript Photoshop Mac automation tools
The benefit of our examples is that they can be easily customized for your own automation needs.
At present the following commercial tools/solutions are available from HELIOS as part of the PDF HandShake UB+ product:
• Automated PDF flattening using Acrobat on a Mac or Windows system
• Automated HTML to PDF conversion on a Mac utilizing Apple's WebKit
HELIOS ImageServer UB+ or PDF HandShake UB+ customers can install and use Tool Server on multiple remote Windows, Mac, and UNIX workstations.
The latest Tool Server documentation is available online in the "HELIOS Software Manuals" section in our support area.

The HELIOS UB+ upgrade special has been extended to the end of February. For a limited time, all upgrades are available for 30% off the new price list. The following updates are available for UB+ customers. Most of them introduce new enhancements for UB+ customers with service agreements. Please always make sure you have installed all current updates. The HELIOS Update Installer makes it very easy to download, install, or remove updates.
