1. World of HELIOS – CeBIT time
Like every year, CeBIT keeps Hannover busy and the weather went
crazy during the show. It was very interesting to see the Sun
4500/4600 x64 based servers as well as Sun's new dual 10 Gigabit
Ethernet adapter. IBM showed a very impressive Virtualization
Manager demo (upcoming), which migrates a running AIX system from
one server to a second physical server without any interrupts
for all running programs and connected clients. Microsoft didn't
become tired to preach their Vista features, and Sony presented
the PlayStation 3 powered by an IBM/Sony/Toshiba cell processor
offering computing power unseen before.

2. HELIOS Admin Tips & Tricks - Column heading
Did you know that the column headings in HELIOS Admin can be re-ordered
by selecting the column title and moving the columns? A control-click
(or right-click) on the column title allows disabling (uncheck)
columns you don't need. Here you can see how it works:
HELIOS Admin will remember this setting the next time you log
in. Window location and size will be remembered as well. Also,
column width is easily adjusted – simply click and drag the
vertical divider between column headings. Note that a minimum
window size is always enforced when you re-open HELIOS Admin,
to allow identifying the window content.
3. HELIOS cold spare agreement (SE003) on a different platform
HELIOS changed its policy: Cold spare agreement customers can
use a cold spare server on a different UNIX based platform, e.g.:
Main server is Sun SPARC (sol4), Backup server is Sun x86 (solx86)
Main server is Sun SPARC (sol4), Backup server is Linux (linux)
Main server is Mac Xserve-Intel (macosx86), Backup server is Mac
G5 (macosx)
With today's modern storage and synchronization solutions server
data can be copied to a different backup server platform, or just
mounted if the file system is compatible between platforms. Basically,
any HELIOS UB supported UNIX platform can be used as a cold spare
server. This allows very flexible and cost-effective backup server
configurations.
Ask your HELIOS partner for details.
4. HELIOS "mkisofs" – UDF disk image backup
utility
In today's world, there seems to be a nifty open source utility
for just about any basic computing need. But sometimes they just
don't meet the expectations. When it came to the open source "mkisofs"
utility, HELIOS developers set to work to turn it into a world-class
tool, eliminating size limitations, and adding extensive cross-platform
support. Now you can download the free HELIOS mkisofs, to archive
Mac, Windows, and UNIX files, with their attributes preserved,
into UDF disk images. If you want to try something really cool,
set up HELIOS Script Server hot folders to enable server-based
drag-and-drop disk image creation!
